John McGuire is one of the country's leading authorities on traditional New England splint basketry. He has made it his mission to build public awareness about traditional basketry. He has woven a career as a self-taught basketmaker teaching internationally in museums, universities, colleges, guilds, and privately at his own studio in Geneva, New York. He is the author of five books and a basketrnaking video. His students refer to him as a gifted teacher. He is known for his historical accuracy, patience, and sense of humor. Under John's congenial guidance students learn a smattering of botany, colonial history, folklore and philosophy that gives special value to the baskets they make in his class.

John has been recently honored as a Living National Treasure and is a member of the:

National Basketry Organization, The Association of Michigan Basketmakers and the Geneva Area
