Basketry Teacher and Lecturer John McGuire
Thank you for your interest in potentially selecting me as a workshop leader or lecturer. In case you are learning about me for the first time here is brief synopsis of my abilities. I have been actively teaching woodsplint and Nantucket basketry for over fifteen years. I initiated basketry programs for Old Sturbridge Village and Hancock Shaker Village Museums. I am a published authority in New England Basketry and have five books in print as well as an instructional video done for Brookfield Craft Center. I am pleased to say that I am an invited instructor for many of this country's most recognized craft programs and regularly return to these successful venues. Should you wish a more in depth vitae I am delighted to mail you a copy as well as provide references.
I know that this document may seem rather lengthy, but I frequently teach in University and College settings and they require every detail to be covered. I think you will find that most of the details are simply those your organization would normally expect. Most of this document deals with the types of classes that I offer. Should anything seem ambiguous feel free to call my office at 315-781-1251 or write me at 2916 Johnson Road, Geneva, N.Y. 14456-9522 and express your concerns. Remember cancellations due to a failure to communicate benefits neither of us.
Introduction
These classes are designed and structured to introduce the participants to black ash splint or Nantucket basketry. The projects are not kits and the harvesting of trees, preparation of materials and teaching can require up to 70 hours to complete. All classes are presented to give the student enough information to complete additional self - generated projects. If there is interest and time permits, I allow participants to carve their own wood handles. My curriculum allows both the dedicated purist and the novice to coexist in the classroom and to successfully complete his or her project. Some classes can be shortened by my providing prefabricated parts. In most cases these are noted in the class descriptions. If you wish a special class or require a condensed class, please get in touch to make these changes. Remember that last minute changes in the size of a class or project are not possible.

Private Classes
For the individual who prefers to take a class alone, or for those who work best in small groups, we offer specialized classes. These classes are offered to all levels from the beginning student to the advanced maker. Private classes allow you to receive individual instruction geared to your specific ability and interests and the opportunity to use one-of-a-kind basket molds which are in my private collection.
Hours: Classes start at 9AM and usually end at 4:30PM with a half hour break for lunch. Most classes are two days, but extended classes and individual instruction can be customized to your interest. All classes are $200.00 per day and that includes all the materials for average sized baskets and instruction. The type of basket made is not solely determined by experience. Spectacular basket projects can be made with good instruction even by novices.
Lunch breaks: Some students decide to bring lunch and others go out to one of the local places. There are a variety of restaurants within three or four miles of the studio. Some deliver if you would like to order take out. Students staying through lunch can choose the Japanese meditation garden or the back deck near the water garden as a location to enjoy. Feel free to walk the landscaped grounds, inspect the fine stone construction, visit the small historic cemetery or take a rest in the hammock strung between two walnut trees. We can suggest evening dining locations. While Geneva is a small rural community it is within one hour of many attractions and several outstanding restaurants.

Lodging: Many students opt for economy and stay at Clarks Motel which is a small family run business. It is located on Routes 5 and 20, 1/4 mile west of Geneva and about three miles from the studio. The telephone number is 315-789-0780. While lacking in appointments, the rooms are comfortable and clean. For those who prefer more luxuriant places, there are hotels on the lake, bed and breakfast places, and other accommodations. Visit www.GenevaNY.com or www.VisitFingerLakes.com for more information.
If you are flying into the Finger Lakes region there are three airports: Rochester, and Syracuse and Ithaca, New York. All are a one hour drive from Geneva. If you do not wish to rent a car, we would be happy to pick you up at the airport and take you back as long as it is prearranged. Please call my associate Chester Freeman to discuss the details of your class. You may call him at the office (315) 781-1251 or email jmcguire@rochester.rr.com Plan well in advance as traveling is a big part of my teaching effort.
Considering bringing a traveling companion or family? There are many small day trips that one can take.
